Les Inedits De Manno Charlemagne
Manno Charlemagne
Released:
Dec 2006
Label:
Manno Charlemagne
These recordings represent the hidden history of Manno Charlemagne's songwriting -- songs that he performed in the 1970s and '80s only in intimate gatherings, as he increasingly drew the ire of Haiti's military dictatorship and tried to avoid its iron fist. You'll hear the influence of another Caribbean protest music -- Cuba's nueva trova -- here, both in Charlemagne's lovely and unadorned melodies and in his fierce, if frequently coded, political rhetoric. This is a remarkable document, and beautiful listening even if you don't understand Haitian Creole.
