Since 1998, Southern Lord has specialized in the dark arts of experimental metal. Within the Church of Thee Overlords 2 drinks from the varying depths of the label's lipid pool of artists. The album opens with behemoth cuts from sludge metallurgists Om and Burning Witch, whose sinister chords could make the Melvins' Buzz O shriek in fear. As the collection progresses, the ominous doom guitars of Sunn 0))) and collaborators Boris and Merbow fracture into murky one-note drones. Then, just when you thought the shadowy feedback had subsided, Earth rocks you into a feverish sleep.
