The second P.I.L. concert set of the early '80s, Live in Tokyo features John Lydon leading an art-punk guitar rock band on songs pulled mostly from his early Public Image catalog. Post-punk fanatics missed the freaky dub/art/scary sound of Lydon with Jah Wobble and Keith Levene, but this set holds up pretty well. Lydon's devilish sermon in "Religion" thrillingly shows the scars of his Catholic upbringing, while "Low Life" and "Death Disco" became next-wave funk post-punk (think early Shriekback). Audio nerds take note: this was the first live album captured on digital recorders.
