Dee Dee Bridgewater journeyed to Mali and recorded this stirring ode to her spiritual homeland. Joined only by a couple of her usual collaborators, the American vocalist surrounded herself with an array of Malian musicians. The meeting of jazz and African pop gives the music a completely different feel and highlights the common bonds between Africa, America and the Caribbean. While the emphasis is on African folk songs, there are also American tunes organically brought into the mix. The exception is the surreal American protest anthem, "Compared to What." While good in itself, it does stand apart from the rest of the set.
