For its reined-in 35-minute length, its inquisitive sense of adventure, and its status as a sonic bridge between the L.A. experimentalists' early sludge and their later elevator metal, SNGL>05 is probably the best place to start exploring Isis. Originally released in 2001 as a sequel to the concurrently recorded Celestial, its first four tracks explore concrete-pouring tempos, clanking repetition and crackling electronic noise; "Beneath Below" creeps and crawls like Throbbing Gristle. At the end, Justin Broadrick remixes "Celestial," letting foreground and background instruments swap places.
