Given the album's title, it's a bit trite to say that John Legend has evolved. But, well, he is different. There are hints of Get Lifted's neo-soul and Once Again's classical pop overtures, but Evolver feels more modern and more conventional than either of his previous albums. That isn't always a bad thing. "Green Light" and "Take Me Away" are likable lite pop, and "No Other Love" (featuring Estelle) is a nice excursion into reggae. Still, one can't help but wonder if John Legend shortchanged himself by sounding so ordinary.
