Keren Ann came to fame in France as a retro chanteuse with a knack for mixing warm 1960s chamber pop with cool-toned emotion. That dreamy distance has only grown colder over her subsequent, beguiling English language albums. With 101, she becomes a studio Svengali, producing, engineering and writing the charts on a moody concept album with criminal undercurrents. Songs such as "She Won't Trade It For Nothing" and "Blood On My Hands" are uniformly strong and showcase her often overlooked sense of humor. Part of the sense of mystery is who Keren Ann actually is under that luscious sonic haze.
