Lil Mama's sassy smash "Lip Gloss" screamed ringtone. However, the 18-year-old Harlemite established herself as more than just a cute song by spiritedly ripping Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend." She continues to impress on her debut with thoughtful songs and the dexterity to alternate between soothingly sung hooks and sharply spit verses. She touches on teenage pregnancy, abusive relationships and drug-addicted mothers on "L.I.F.E.," and experiences heartbreak on "Broken Pieces." Sounding completely comfortable in her skin, Lil Mama succeeds in providing a positive voice for the young people.
