An '00s indie band from Texas doing '60s folk from Britain? It's actually not as strange as it sounds. Midlake have all the right ingredients to make such a combo work: Tim Smith's brooding baritone, a proclivity for intricate guitar pickin', a slight psychedelic edge. Still, The Courage of Others is quite a departure from the quintet's previous two albums. Soft flutes somehow make the minor key melodies even heavier, as the band takes an almost prog approach to traditional folk (think King Crimson hanging out with Pentangle). It's an intense listen, but a satisfying one.
