What does it mean that Pete Yorn's first self-titled album doesn't sound much like anything else he's done? Was the polished adult-alt rock and the coffee-shop-quirky duets with Scarlett Johansson not the real Pete Yorn? Where has this scruffy rock star capable of such wide-ranging expression -- gut-grabbing, post-punk rawness ("Always"); thoughtful yet jubilant indie rock ("Rock Crowd"); warm, alt-country Gram Parsons covers ("Wheels") -- been hiding? If anyone knows how to bring out a rock god alter-ego, it's the Pixies' Frank Black (aka Black Francis), who produced the album.
