Leading up to its release, sundry hype bloggers -- as well as Say Anything singer Max Bemis himself -- framed Anarchy, My Dear as the rightful successor to 2004's ...Is a Real Boy, not only their best album but a pivotal slice of music in the transformation of emo pop into mainstream youth culture. There are parallels for sure, namely the way Bemis' scathing words rub up against big pop-punk hooks, which themselves crash into the rhythm section's manic changes. But a lot of living has passed between the two. Nowadays, Say Anything sound more weary and circumspect than lovingly fractured.
