With momentary strolls away from gospel themes into Cotton Club jazz like "Tall Skinny Papa," Tharpe evokes the spirits of Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and, particularly, Billy Holiday. Her sound is raw, with echoing jazz grooves, piano, banjo and voice all free to roam, delivered in a rhythm that makes you go "mmm-hmm."
