Napster extends music catalogue to over 10 million tracks
Original pioneer of online music extends library, driving more music exploration
LONDON – 25 February, 2010
Napster, the pioneer of digital music, announced today an expansion of its online music catalogue to over 10 million tracks, making it one of the largest online digital music libraries in the UK. From today, Napster users will be able to stream or download tracks from a choice of 790,000 artists and 980,000 albums covering all genres of music ranging from classical to pop.
As online music services continue to drive the music industry forward, with consumers increasingly preferring to log on to their PCs to listen to or purchase tracks directly, the need for online music providers to continue to evolve their services and maintain fresh content has never been more important. Today’s music user is no longer looking simply for a track to play, but instead is looking for tracks or artists that they connect within other ways. The rise of online music and social networking has facilitated this demand, allowing users to engage in different ways with artists that they like through the delivery of new, unique content such as live tracks, online artist profiles and exclusive interviews, enabling consumers to establish a more sophisticated knowledge of the artists and music that they support.
As the digital music space continues to grow, the expansion of Napster’s catalogue builds on its heritage of music discovery, allowing users to browse and explore the catalogue for new music they might enjoy. Personalisation features such as Automix, which allows users to select tracks that they like as a base for an search of Napster’s music library to deliver recommendations of new artists and tracks that they might enjoy, or tailored playlists such as ‘Napster 50’, allow subscribers to find new added value content, enriching their listening experience.
“The expansion of Napster’s music catalogue to 10 million tracks demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering the complete package music service to Napster subscribers and our dedication to enabling music lovers to explore and discover new music online,” said Thorsten Schliesche, Napster's Vice President Sales and Marketing Europe. “With this extended catalogue, Napster users will now have even more to choose from when selecting the tracks that they want to listen to. Complimented by Napster’s unique personalisation features, allowing users to tailor their music experience according to their own wants and needs, the new catalogue offers even more possibility for discovering great new music or old favourites, whether through Napster’s unlimited streaming or by downloading tracks to keep. This step is a reflection of Napster’s ongoing work with the industry and the labels to ensure that we continue to deliver the ultimate in online music, benefitting both our customers and the industry.”
